- Problem
- Gamers with an upper limb difference struggle to grip a controller and reach its buttons, triggers and joysticks, and commercial prostheses cost from £5,000 to £50,000.
- Design
- Hybrid myoelectric/body-powered hand with three digits, a hinged thumb for joysticks, silicone-tipped index finger for the buttons, and a bistable spring steel digit that wraps the grip. Working on unmodified controllers.
- What broke
- Fully myoelectric version cost too much and drained the battery so we switched to a hybrid design. Slap band digit also rolls into a circle instead of clamping tight, which is why I would use a shape-memory alloy next
- Result
- A design under £500, roughly 10x cheaper than the nearest commercial prosthesis, pitched to a panel of Imperial College London staff
